The tactile elements of ceramics have always intrigued me. It’s a medium I’ve had a desire to explore for decades, yet somehow, never managed to do. Until now.
Necessity and desire finally drove me to play with concepts and ideas I’ve had floating around in my brain for years. Working with Steve Smith at Defiance College, I created a series of stoneware stamps then used those to create a series of buttons for knitters.
The Buttons are still in the stages of testing glazes, finishes, styles, and sizes but I couldn’t resist playing with some of the pieces RIGHT NOW! Several jewelry pieces are the starting point of this impatience to make something with the 400+ medallions spread across the table in my studio.
Special thanks to Robert Sebring for working with me on product photography. It was my desire to convey through photography the tactile elements of the pieces. As we continue to play with the photography of these pieces, I think you’ll want to reach out and touch them. Go ahead. You know you want to. I certainly can’t keep my hands off them.
So far I have completed tie tacks (also terrific as lapel pins) and earrings. Necklace photos will be forthcoming next week along with new buttons.
I hope you enjoy these as much as I’ve enjoyed making them.
The Earrings are available for sale now.
