Combining 2 of my favorites things, knitting and great soap, seems like a no brainer right?  Whether you’re using one of my fabulous soaps (yes, I’m biased) or your own, these soap socks are terrific.  Put your bar of soap inside,  Cinch the tie and after each use, hang your soap in your soap sock in the shower or tub using the tie as a hook.  It keeps your soap dry and eliminates soap scum from the ledge in the tub or shower.
Practical?  Yes.  Fun to knit?  Of course.

Okay.  I admit it.  This is silly and more than just a little bit neurotic.  But as a bonafide lip balm junkie, I can’t stand it when my lip balm gathers bits of flotsam and jetsam in the bottom of my handbag or pocket.  On the other hand, I have all these gorgeous leftover yarns from so many projects.  In the true fashion of you’ve got your peanut butter in my chocolate (or was it the other way around?) I combined my love of leftover yarn with my hatred for gritty lip balm.  Make one and you’ll see the madness of my ways.

Little Lace Cup Cuff ::: Pattern Download
I can’t knit enough cup cuffs.  I like to wear them to the coffee shop.  I like to experiment with stitches using these small projects.  And sometimes, just sometimes, I like to indulge in a yarn that’s a bit out of my budget by making a pair to wear in the studio.

brightideas-2

This is one of my favorite projects for leftover yarns.  Especially those little bits that I love soooo much I wish I could get them running through my fingers again as I knit.

Make these little guys in any size or gauge yarn with appropriate sized needles.  Generally, whatever needle the yarn label recommends, I go one size smaller so the stuffing doesn’t show.  Fill them with fibrefill, wool roving, or yarn scraps.  Add a little lavender for a night-time treat for little ones or add a little catnip for an anytime treat for stoner kitties.

Cuff to Cup ::: free pattern

It’s true.  A cup of coffee can boost your local economy and save a tree all in one fell swoop.

In an effort to boost MY local economy, I frequent the 3 gourmet coffee shops in my hometown of Defiance, Ohio.  I know the “feed the pig” commercials say how much you’ll save if you make coffee at home, but the barristas are my friends and neighbers.  Every time I see that commercial I cringe thinking that is how much money I would be TAKING AWAY from the income of our coffee shops.  When you take that income away, they can’t employ as many people, many of them students who can’t afford to go without a part time job.

So rally, and show your support while saving a tree and saving their overhead.  Knit a fashionable wrist cuff using your favorite scrap yarns.  Wear it to your coffee shop.  Order a cup of Joe and proudly pronounce you do NOT need a cup sleeve because you made your own.  Wear it proudly.  Make your friends envious.  And best of all, find a cool use for the little bits of leftover yarn.

  • Very good article. I’ve found your blog via Bing and I’m really glad about the information you provide in your articles. Btw your blogs layout is really broken on the Chrome browser. Would be really great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the great work!

Fantastic! I love your patterns. There may be some holiday gifts coming from this page. :-) So glad I found you on Ravelry!

  • There are times I wish I had a creative block so I could get to sleep without ideas swirling through my brain. Honestly, the times I feel a little less creative inspiration, I look back through my idea files. When I don’t have time to get everything out during a creative maelstrom I jot notes, sketches, etc on anything handy…a piece of 2×4, the wall in the studio, scraps of paper, gas bills, whatever is handy. Those all go into a box and during a dry spell I rifle through. There is usually something in there to work with, and if not, I can always write about the process of going through old ideas!

  • Great post! How do you go about thinking of things to write about? I often suffer from writers block. How do you power through it?

  • Thank you so much Amy!

I’ll be posting a few more free patterns over the new few weeks!

Because of your free patterns I found while browsing the web, I just ordered your lip balm and soap. I can’t wait to check them out and order more for christmas gifts! You just made my holiday so simple, thank you. Also, I have made the lip balm cozy and lace cuff and continue to get compliments daily.
